While they have a similar appearance, 18ct white gold and platinum are quite different

Platinum is naturally white, dense and extremely durable, while 18ct white gold is an alloy of gold and other metals that is typically rhodium plated to give it a bright white finish. Over time, this plating may need to be refreshed.
